These mid-sized bags are probably a bit too large to be used as a day bag, but too small for long trips. They are suitable for carrying all of the essentials for overnight stays, or weekend breaks (if you travel light).
As they are unlikely to be worn for long periods, comfort isn't a major consideration. Unless you really do want to use it as a daysack and carry several kilos of weight around with you all day. Waist straps on this size of bag would be overkill, they just won't carry enough weight to justify it.
If you think it is likely to be thrown around a lot, you should look for a material thickness greater than 400D.
